Fort Lauderdale is known for an incredible Pride Festival, but there are several events throughout the year that contribute to celebrating the rainbow flag and what it represents. One of these is the Stonewall Festival and Parade in June. Thousands of people flock to Wilton Drive for a fantastic parade and adjoining festivities for this premier annual event. The Stonewall festival marketplace will come alive with vendors and food trucks, providing you with unlimited fun for the afternoon!

The Political History of Fort Lauderdale Pride

Fort Lauderdale Pride has been a staple since 1978. It was founded following a 1977 Dale County human-rights ordinance that prohibited discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. What should have been a celebration was countered with a highly publicized campaign to repeal the ordinance by Anita Bryant, a vehement opposer. In the aftermath, legislation was passed to outlaw adoption by gays and lesbians in the state of Florida and more campaigns were led around the United States. Ultimately defeated by electoral appeal, the ordinance brought together gay groups and activists to fight its discrimination.

Therefore, National Gay Pride Day was established on June 28, 1977. At this time, several hundred people marched through Coconut Grove carrying signs, shouting slogans, and ending in a street party. The Pride parade and rally grew to 1,500 people the following year, starting an annual tradition that has since skyrocketed in size and scope. Now known as Fort Lauderdale Pride, this event happens each year as a continued tradition. But there are several other events all year long that also celebrate the diversity of our beautiful city!
